Capitals decide to get Fussey
19th August 2009
Edinburgh Capitals are pleased to be able to announce the signing of Canadian forward Owen Fussey for the 09/10 season in the Elite Ice Hockey League. Fussey sent last season in Italy playing for Fassa HC where he had 27 points from 17 goals and 10 assists.
Fussey was selected by the Washington Capitals in the third round of the 2001 National Hockey League Draft. He played 4 games for the Washington Capitals and picked up 1 point with an assist. Fussey cut his teeth with the Calgary Hitmen and has extensive experience in both the AHL and ECHL. He spent two seasons in the ECHL playing for Columbia Inferno and has played for Portland Pirates, Hershey Bears and also the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. The Marlies of course are one of the AHL teams that the Capitals will be facing in the Gardiner Cup Tournament in September.
Edinburgh Capitals coach, Doug Christiansen, commented, "I am thrilled to bring another player who has played in the NHL to Edinburgh. Owen Fussey is an impact player. He has an NHL calibre shot and is someone who brings a lot to the table. He killed penalties throughout his career in the AHL and also played power play. We will be looking for him to contribute in all situations. Owen is a great skater and extremely fit. He will be able to play a lot of minutes for us from day one.
Owen won a Calder Cup in the AHL with Hershey. He knows what it takes to win a championship. I am looking for him to help lead right away. He has proven himself on the Olympic ice sheet, which was proven by his All-Star selection last season in Italy.
I have really enjoyed recruiting Owen. He is great to speak with and seems very bright and conscientious. Owen has a British Passport and is hoping to someday represent the UK internationally."
Looking at the roster so far, Christiansen added, "I am excited about what our 5 import forwards bring to the table. Owen is proven goal scorer and potential star forward. Martin Cingel was a unanimous captain selection last year and finished second on the team in goals. Darius Pliskauskas is a play-making centre who can play PK and distribute the puck. Simon Lambert is an incredibly quick forward who I think will be great for us. Finally, I hope to contribute 20 plus goals as I have the last two seasons.
The addition of Andrew Sharp means that our final import will not be a tough guy. We will announce shortly who it is. I know who we will have now and I am excited to have a 6th import forward who can contribute offensively."
